Tips for Diabetes Diet Success

One of the most important factor to manage diabetes is nutrition. After all, diabetes deals directly with the conversion of food into usable energy. Diabetics are either unable to make enough insulin or their cells block the insulin from being used properly. Whether you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, a proper diabetes diet is very important for disease management and good health. If you've been diagnosed with this condition, your doctor will educate you further on the importance of your diet. You may even be referred to a dietary specialist who can help you plan your food choices.

Maintaining a healthy body weight can help you keep your blood glucose levels down. What your weight should be will depend on your height and bone structure. What is considered overweight for one person may be considered normal for another. Every diabetic should be going in for regular checkups, at which time you will be weighed. Your doctor will tell you if you need to lose or gain weight. If you do need to make adjustments to your weight, it's important to do so in a safe way. That means losing or gaining the proper amount of weight slowly.

Diabetics will usually be directed to consume smaller, more frequent meals as opposed to large meals spaced further apart. This helps keep blood sugar at an even level. How much and when you eat isn't the only thing to consider. You will also need to watch what you are eating. Go for healthy, whole foods. Lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low fat dairy are examples of good choices. Avoid sugar, white flour, alcohol, caffeine, trains fats and overly processed foods. Water is the best thing you can drink when it comes to losing weight and staying hydrated.

It's recommended that you consult with a registered dietician or nutritionist when planning your diabetes diet. They can teach you all about eating for good health and even provide you with resources to help you make smart food choices when you're at home, at the supermarket or dining out. Good nutrition can help you lower your blood glucose levels and keep them at a steady, acceptable level. People with pre-diabetes can potentially even prevent full-blown diabetes from developing with the right diet and enough physical activity.
