The Basics of Diabetes Medical Supplies

Diabetes is a serious medical condition in which the body does not produce insulin, does not produce enough insulin, or does not use insulin properly. There are three different types of diabetes -- Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. Type 2 is the most common variety and is often diagnosed in the adult years. Type 1 diabetes is less common and is usually diagnosed in childhood. Gestational diabetes, as its name suggests, occurs during pregnancy. All types of diabetes require diabetes medical supplies for testing and management.
The very least a diabetic needs is a good testing kit. Monitoring blood sugar is crucial for all diabetics. Both low and high blood sugar can lead to a variety of dangerous conditions, some of which can be fatal. Fortunately, keeping a close watch on blood sugar levels can prevent many of these risks. To test blood sugar, you need a glucose testing meter, test strips, and a lancing device. The procedure is simple. The lancing device is used to draw a drop of blood from the finger or arm. The blood is placed on the test strip, which is inserted into the meter. Results take mere seconds to display. Thanks to innovations in design, the lancing process is virtually painless and easy for even squeamish diabetics to do. Your doctor can walk you through the testing procedure if you're unsure. How often you will need to test will depend on your condition and the advice of your doctor.
Insulin is another item that might be required for the management of diabetes, especially Type 1. The most common way insulin is administered is via injection, although pump or inhalation may also be used. Your doctor will tell you how often you will need insulin and what variety you require. The average for most patients is between two and four times daily. If you have questions about insulin or the administration procedure, consult with your doctor.
Other diabetes medical supplies necessary may include ketone urine testing kits, glucose tablets, food or drink to raise blood sugar quickly, medical identification items and incontinence supplies. Most all necessary supplies can be found at your local medical supply store or pharmacy. Some people like the convenience of shopping online for their diabetes management supplies. Lots of options make it easier than ever to manage your condition effectively with a minimum of hassle.
