Which Diabetes Testing Supplies are Best for You?
![]() |
Every diabetic individual needs diabetes testing supplies. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is extremely important when it comes to properly managing your diabetes, whether you have Type 1, Type 2, or gestational diabetes. You will need a blood glucose meter, test strips and a lancing device. The blood glucose meters of today are highly sophisticated and provide fast, accurate readings in a matter of moments.
Choosing from the many glucose testing meters can be daunting. Your doctor may recommend a particular type of meter. If not, keep your potential choices narrowed down to the trusted brand names. Examples of popular brands include the Accu-Chek from Roche, One Touch from Life Scan and Ascencia from Bayer. Within these brands, you'll find lots of selection. There are meters that come in kit form complete with testing strips and lancing supplies. There are meters that offer clear digital readouts and even those with sound. Talking glucose meters are ideal for individuals with poor eyesight. Prices for glucose testing meters range from cheap to expensive depending on the features. If your meter doesn't come with accessories, you can purchase test strips and lancets separately.
In addition to blood testing supplies, you might also need urine testing supplies. Some diabetics, especially those with Type 1 diabetes, must also test their ketone levels. Urine testing supplies include a collection device such as a cup and test strips which are dipped in the urine. These supplies are easy to use and quite affordable. Your doctor will tell you if urine testing is necessary or if blood testing is all your condition requires. You will also be instructed on how to lower and raise glucose levels as needed.
Using your diabetes testing supplies is easy. When it comes to checking blood sugar, all you need is one tiny drop of blood placed on a test strip, which then is inserted into the testing meter. The whole process takes only a few minutes, with results taking only seconds. Your doctor will instruct you on how often you should use your testing supplies. Some diabetics test multiple times daily, others test less frequently. It's important to follow your doctor's instructions to the letter when caring for your diabetes, regardless of type or severity.
