Diabetes Testing Information for the Newly Diagnosed
![]() |
If you've recently been diagnosed with diabetes, you may be overwhelmed by all the information being presented to you. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, which is a condition in which your body isn't producing enough insulin or isn't using the insulin being produced. Most people are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes during their adult years. Regardless of when the condition is diagnosed, proper management is crucial for health and wellness. Diabetes testing is a big part of reducing the dangerous risks of this disease. Untreated, diabetes can cause life threatening problems such as nerve and organ damage, blindness and heart disease.
Testing your blood sugar is something you'll need to do every single day. Your doctor will direct you on the best times to test. Many diabetics test first thing in the morning, after meals and before bed. If your blood sugar is too high, you will be taught how to reduce it using diet and exercise. If your blood sugar is too low, you can raise it with glucose tablets, food or beverages as recommended by your physician. Some diabetes patients, including those with the less common Type 1 diabetes, must inject themselves with insulin on a regular basis.
The average test kit will contain a blood glucose meter, test strips and a lancet for drawing blood. The procedure is simple. After preparing your supplies as directed, you will simply extract a drop of blood using the lancet and place it on the test strip. The strip is inserted into the meter and a result is provided. Some meters use color changing readouts while others are digital. There are even talking meters that let you hear your results as well as see them. Today's test kits provide accurate results in seconds.
You may be nervous about diabetes testing at home. The more you test, the easier the procedure will become. You will learn to perform your blood sugar tests quickly and efficiently with a little practice. If you simply cannot bear to prick your own finger, ask a loved one to do it for you until you become more comfortable. Testing your blood sugar is a crucial part of diabetes management. By knowing how high or low your glucose levels are, you can adjust them accordingly and reduce your risk of serious complications.
