Tips for Coping with Juvenile Diabetes

Juvenile diabetes, also known as Type 1 diabetes, is a condition in which a child's body cannot produce insulin. Insulin is necessary for converting glucose into energy that's needed for survival. Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition that is first diagnosed during childhood. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes must take insulin on a regular basis to prevent life threatening complications. A diagnosis of diabetes can be frightening for parents and children. However, with the right education and support, it doesn't have to be.

The more you know about your child's condition, the better. Be sure to ask the pediatrician every question you can think of, and take notes if you need to. Check out books on the subject and consult the American Diabetes Association. You may even want to join a support group for parents of diabetic children. Education and support is not only crucial for parents, but for children as well. Even young children are capable of understanding the basics of diabetes. It's important that they understand as much as possible about their condition for safety and management purposes.

Your child's diabetes should be explained to them in a clear and concise way. Use language they can understand and speak in a calm tone of voice. How to best express the details of diabetes to your child will depend on their age and level of comprehension. It is important to state the facts honestly without encouraging panic. Let your child know that they are not the only diabetic in the world. Explain to them that millions of people around the world have diabetes and their condition is in no way their fault. It is important for them to understand the importance of diabetes testing and management. They should also be assured that they can lead a perfectly normal life, even with diabetes.

In addition to communicating regularly with your child's doctor, it is important to talk to your child's school about their condition. If your child requires blood glucose testing or insulin administration throughout the day, you will need to arrange for this with your child's school. It's a good idea for your child to wear a discreet ID necklace or bracelet that informs others of their diabetes. A diagnosis of juvenile diabetes can seem overwhelming. However, it is entirely possible for diabetic children to lead happy, healthy, long lives. Expressing this to your child can ease their worries and help them cope with their condition more effectively. If your child has trouble coming to terms with their diabetes, counseling may be helpful.
