Managing Diabetes: Ways to Ease the Stress
![]() |
A diagnosis of diabetes can be frightening. Whether you have Type 1, Type 2 or gestational diabetes, you might be feeling overwhelmed and nervous about your diagnosis. Dealing with any type of medical condition can be stressful. However, with proper education and support, managing diabetes can be easier and less stressful for you and your loved ones. The first thing you should do is speak to your doctor regarding the diagnosis. You probably have lots of questions -- be sure to ask them. If you think of more questions later, write them down to ask your doctor at your next appointment.
Blood sugar testing is another very important part of proper diabetes management. Some diabetics need to check their sugar levels only once per day, while others must do so multiple times daily. Your doctor will tell you how often you should be checking your blood sugar. The test can be done quickly and easily with a test kit. The average kit comes with a glucose testing meter and test strips. You'll need a lancet for drawing blood. One small drop is enough for a readout. Today's meters are fast and effective. Most of them offer digital readouts, while some even talk. Some diabetics feel uncomfortable testing their blood sugar at first, but the process gets easier with time.
You'll want to keep a diabetes kit at home, at school or work, and even in your vehicle. A well-stocked kit should contain testing supplies, insulin if you are required to take it, glucose tablets for low blood sugar and medical identification information. By keeping a kit in several locations, you'll always have peace of mind. In addition to good preparation, support from others can help you deal with a diagnosis of diabetes.
Talking to friends and family about your condition can help you feel better and educate them about diabetes. Managing diabetes is best done as a team effort. Keep the lines of communication open with your doctor and make sure you're attending regular checkups. You may even want to join a support group for people with diabetes. There may be groups in your area, or you may decide to join an online group. Socializing with others who share your condition can make you feel less alone and frightened. Learning how others cope with their diabetes can be helpful when it comes to devising a personal health plan.
